CPAP makes me fart and belch … help!

Question: Help me, please! My CPAP is making me fart and belch. I’ve been using CPAP for 18 months and this is just starting for no other conceivable answer. Any ideas what I can do because this is really embarassing, though as a teen, I probably would have loved it.

Answer: This is something a lot of folks do when they are fairly new to xPAP. Some people develop the problem after they’ve been on the machine for awhile, other folks within the first few months. It really varies, but it isn’t uncommon.

The problem is that you are literally swallowing air in your sleep. It’s something that your body will learn to do with — with time.

Fart’s away

When you get up in the morning, try doing some mild calisthenics, toe touches, deep knee bends, or such things. That way it will help eliminate the air by belching or fart or both, thereby relieving the pressure.

This is something that happens to many people, sometimes not long after they start using xPAP, but other times it starts a year or more into therapy. This is caused because you are swallowing air during sleep, sort of like in grade school when kids swallow air to belch during class for laughs.

Are you using a heated humidifier. It could also be tied to lack of humidity and you doing some mouth breathing, as well. If you’re using a heated humidifier, perhaps try turning the heat up a little more, as that alone has seemingly fixed the rooty toots for at least several folks.
