Pilots fly past destination airport; FAA, others wonder if pilots were asleep at the controls

Northwest Airlines flight 188 flew 150 miles past the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, where passengers thought they would land the evening of Thurs., Oct 22, 2009. Federal officials say the pilots claim they were distracted, and one version is that they had been engaged in a heated discussion over airline policy.

Sleep Awareness Week puts focus on health insurance, good sleep, exercise, diet to help anxiety over economy, improve health, & productivity

Awake In America is joining forces with hundreds of organizations and the National Sleep Foundation to mark National Sleep Awareness Week 2009, which runs from March 2 through March 8.

Awake In America will be focusing additional energies this week to help focus the need for health insurance coverage sleep disorders, increase awareness about the importance of sufficient sleep, the dangers of undiagnosed and untreated sleep disorders, and the consequences of sleep deprivation on a personal and societal level. These extra efforts will be done through email, one-on-one calls, as well as through printed materials the organization has mailed in the weeks leading up to National Sleep Awareness Week 2009.

Economy causes one-third of Americans to lose sleep

One-third of Americans are losing sleep over the the U.S. economy and other personal financial concerns, according to a poll released by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). The poll suggests that inadequate sleep leads to unhealthy lifestyles and negatively impacts health and safety.

NSF’s Sleep in America poll reveals striking disparities in the sleep patterns, health habits and quality of life between healthy and unhealthy Americans. Those in good health are two-times more likely than those in poor health to work efficiently, exercise, or eat healthy because they are getting enough sleep.

Tips to successfully sleep through Daylight Saving Time changes

When the U.S. Congress decided to change the start of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in 2005, that one decision brought about a lot of headaches to the world, including for computer manufacturers. The biggest headache, though, will be for people, especially for those who have calendars that were printed in bulk two or three years ago, shipped to a warehouse, and then distributed. This year clocks in most of the United States are moved ahead at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 8.

According to Jodi Mindell, PhD, a nationally recognized expert in pediatric sleep, “It’s not uncommon for children to experience sleep disruptions with the return of Daylight Saving Time.”

There are now 131 days and counting, and with the course certification completed for the 20th running of Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, Philips Respironics is poised to make the most of its first major sponsorship of a sporting event and the debut of the half marathon by using the platform to raise awareness about the importance of sleep to health and wellness.

The company, now a part of Royal Philips Electronics’ home healthcare business, is a title sponsor of the half marathon, scheduled for May 3, 2009.

was 306,340,710. Sleep researchers estimate approximately seven percent
of the population suffers from obstructive sleep apnea. Using that
estimate, there are potentially 21,443,850 apneics in the U.S.

As of May 2, 2009 at 9:47 p.m. (-0500) (ET), the world population
was 6,777,286,604. Sleep researchers estimate approximately seven percent
of the population suffers from obstructive sleep apnea. Using that
estimate, there are potentially 474,410,062 apneics in the world.
