Mayo journal publishes study of Nuvigil in shift work sleep disorder patients

Cephalon announced that Mayo Clinic Proceedings published data from a Phase III trial of Nuvigil (armodafinil) Tablets [C-IV] demonstrating it significantly improved wakefulness throughout the shift in patients with excessive sleepiness associated with shift work disorder.

Modafinil used to improve cognitive performance affects brain dopamine activity; suggests abuse & dependence potential

Preliminary research in healthy men suggests that the narcolepsy drug modafinil, increasingly being used to enhance cognitive abilities, affects the activity of dopamine in the brain in a way that may create the potential for abuse and dependence, according to a study in JAMA.

Modafinil, a wake-promoting drug used to treat sleep disorders, may enhance cognition and is used off-label for the treatment of cognitive dysfunction in some psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Study takes a step toward better defining fatigue

In the study, patients reported a loss of strength or energy that included feelings of tiredness or weakness, which may progress to exhaustion, and lack of energy and stamina.

Because of the qualitative technique that Williams and her team used, their dialogues with patients revealed comments such as, “I don’t have a body part that is tired. My whole body is tired”, “I just have a weak feeling … pretty well all over”, and “Fatigue to me is just a feeling of no energy.”

Provigil approved for sleep apnea, shift workers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration‘s advisory panel held hearings about using of Provigil (modafinil) for people with obstructive sleep apnea, as well as people suffering shiftwork sleep disorders has announced its decision.
