Convenience store chain promotes campaign for alert driving throughout the holiday season

This New Year’s Eve Cumberland Farms is making life a little bit easier for revelers, as we bid so-long to 2009 and ring in 2010.

From 5 p.m. on December 31, 2009 until 5 a.m. on January 1, 2010, all Cumberland Farms locations will be offering free, piping-hot Farmhouse Blend coffee for the third year in a row.

Sleep deprivation followed by caffeine intake prevents risk-taking

According to research findings presented Wednesday, June 10, at Sleep 2009, the 23rd annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, caffeine use prevents increased risk-taking that occurs after several nights of total sleep deprivation.

Results indicate that despite extreme sleep deprivation, participants who had consumed caffeine did not exhibit increased risky behavior on the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART), a computerized measure of impulsive risk-taking, according to the findings, released in abstract form, titled, “Caffeine Protects Against Increased Risk-Taking Behavior During.”

Sleeping pills, according to a new study, is a short-term solution to sleep issues, such as insomnia, but that’s nothing new. Sleep specialists have been saying that for years. The long-term solution for some sleep issues, such as insomnia, are more about your knowledge of bedtime habits that could help relieve insomnia.

Many people sleep better when they are on holiday and wish that they could sleep as well all the time. But according to the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG), it is not only being free of daily worries that can make a difference to sleep.

Get some sleep before getting behind the wheel

Driving drowsy can be as dangerous as drinking and driving. Sleepiness slows reaction time, decreases awareness and impairs judgment, all of which may lead to a greater likelihood for potential accidents.

Studied have shown that being awake for 24 hours straight is the equivalent of being legally intoxicated. And mixing lack of sleep and alcohol worsens the situation exponentially.

Sleep hygiene is essential to sleeping well

Sleep disruption is common, especially during times when you may feel emotionally overwhelmed. Anxiety, relentless replaying of the day’s events, and heightened emotions may significantly interfere with your sleep. Lack of sleep robs you of needed rest, making management of your illness more difficult.

Some people, for a variety of reasons, still have sleep disturbances related to the events of September 11, 2001, which saw the destruction of the World Trade Centers and partial destruction of the Pentagon. Other people, especially family members and friends of deployed American military personnel, don’t always sleep well. There are always those people who are stressed about things, such as stress at work, lack of a job, loss of a job, family issues, or financial issues.
