Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease which makes it hard to breathe. Also known by other names, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, COPD is now the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, but it also causes long-term disability. The number of people living with COPD is on the rise — more than 12 million are currently diagnosed with it. It’s estimated another 12 million may have COPD yet do not realize it nor have they been diagnosed.
A study published in the November 1, 2009 issue of the journal Sleep shows that retirement is followed by a sharp decrease in the prevalence of sleep disturbances. Findings suggest that this general improvement in sleep is likely to result from the removal of work-related demands and stress rather than from actual health benefits of retirement.
At the intersection of two U.S. health epidemics — obesity and chronic pain — researchers found black patients with chronic pain were less likely to have their weight or body mass index (BMI) recorded, even though they are at higher risk for having obesity when compared with their white counterparts.
This new study also revealed that obesity is related to greater disability and poorer functioning, over and above the impact of a person’s pain level.
